IE9 Final released!

Internet Explorer 9 was officially released yesterday at 9PM. Since then, the download rate of IE9 browser has gone up the roof. Lets discuss the features of this release.

More Spacing - IE9 has renovated its interface by giving it a simplistic look, kinda like Google Chrome. It displays more of the webpage, unlike Firefox which occupies the whole screen with its gigantic tabs and its large address bar and huge navigation icons. Thanks to Microsoft, IE9 now has the navigation buttons, address bar and the tab bar all neatly arranged in a single row. The Bookmarks bar or (in IE9's lingo) the Favourites bar, is in a separate row, placed cleanly without any additional set of icons making it look nice and pristine. The rest of the whole space is occupied to display the webpage giving you a better view of a site.

Graphics Overhaul - One of the most talked about features is the GPU acceleration offered by IE9. As we know this feature is being introduced by many browsers, recently Firefox introduced the same feature in its 4.0. But IE9's GPU is the one that will impress you a lot. If you want to test your GPU's acceleration head over to the TEST DRIVE and find out for yourself. You will be presented with a tank full of Fish and the site will lock your framerate to give you an approximate value of your FPS. Of course IE9 proves to deliver it faster than Chrome. According to my test result, Chrome was giving me 20-30FPS whereas IE9 had boosted my rate to 60FPS. If you are not comfortable with GPU acceleration and suspect that your system cant deliver high-end graphics, then you can always turn off the GPU support.

IE9's new Javascript engine called as 'Chakra' delivers some world renowned technologies such as CSS, HTML5 and SVG2 which makes it easier and a lot more fun to work on the internet.

                                                                      New Features

  • Address Bar: IE9 Address bar or the "One Box" as it is popularly called, is more versatile now compared to the previous versions. The search button, autocomplete button, stop and refresh button are all integrated nicely inside the bar. The address bar displays live search results through its default search engine, which is unquestionably BING, but you can configure it to suit your taste, GOOGLE or YAHOO. By putting a question mark at the end of a search term, the bar displays you possible suggestions. Also if you turn on Bing as your search engine, the bar sorts through your history and your favourites to match your search term.

  • Tabs: The Tabs now behave sort of like Chrome. If a site gets hanged, the tab can be shut down from the task manager and still allow you to continuously work without affecting other open tabs. They also can be rearranged like Chrome and can also detach itself.

  • Pin Sites: If you visit a site regularly, you have to manually open it via a bookmark or a favourite button in your browser. But in IE9, you can now pin it to your taskbar as a separate application. All you have to do is drag the site to the bar and it will straightaway get pinned to your taskbar. The next time you want to open a site just click the particular button on the taskbar and IE will automatically open it for you.

  • Downloads: IE9 finally has introduced a Download manager this time. You can now pause a download and resume it later. It displays recently downloaded files and also allows you to search files in your download directory. If you have an antivirus that integrates itself into IE9, the downloaded file gets automatically scanned before saving it to the hard disk.

  • Performance: IE9 opens up sites at a much faster rate now, compared to the older versions. Because of the new Add-on 'Performance Advisor', IE9 runs more faster and more reliably. For a detailed Performance analysis please refer to the chart below.

VERDICT: All in all, IE9 seems to have improved considerably and many security issues have been patched by Microsoft. IE9 appears more aesthetic and blends easily with Windows 7 giving it a more modern and unique MICROSOFTy look to the users. As the MICROSOFT has aptly taglined IE9, "Unlocking the beauty of the Web", it truly does provide you a richer and cleaner environment to surf sites.
